Privacy Policy

Last updated: November 5, 2026

MalTranslate is a client-side web app. It has no backend server, no user accounts, no analytics and no advertising. This policy explains what happens to your data when you use it.

In short: your images go to Google's Gemini API to be read and translated. Everything else (your API key, settings and history) stays in your own browser.

1. Data stored on your device

The following is saved in your browser's local storage and is never sent to us:

The app's files are also cached by a service worker so it loads quickly and works offline. That cache contains only the app itself, not your data.

2. Data sent to Google

When you tap Extract & Translate, the image you selected and your API key are sent directly from your browser to the Google Gemini API over HTTPS. Google processes the request and returns the text.

That processing is governed by Google's terms, not ours. Depending on your account and region, Google may keep or use API inputs to improve its services, especially on the free tier. Please review the Gemini API Additional Terms and Google Privacy Policy, and avoid uploading images with sensitive personal information.

3. Camera access

If you use the camera button, your browser will ask for permission. The camera feed is only shown on your screen. A single frame is captured when you press the shutter, and the camera is turned off when you close the camera view. Video is never recorded or uploaded.

4. Other third parties

The app loads fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests font files from Google's servers. GitHub (or whichever service hosts the app) may keep standard server logs such as IP addresses, as any website host does.

5. What we don't do

6. Your control

You can delete individual history items in the app, or wipe everything MalTranslate has saved in this browser with the button below. Clearing your browser's site data does the same.

7. Children

MalTranslate isn't directed at children under 13. Google's own age requirements apply to obtaining a Gemini API key.

8. Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date.
